Search on the smoking prevalence of the students in the Adıyaman University

This study has been carried out to define the students? smoking prevalence, attitudes, behaviors and thoughts, standard of attainments about smoking, addiction states according to the Fagerstrom Addiction Test, application level in Adıyaman University throughout the students? views in terms of Law No 5727 Controlling and Preventing the Damages of the Tobacco Products, and their views about the law, and the effects of university education on smoking fact.This study has been carried by the students training in 2 faculties and 2 colleges and research sample presenting the population consists of 489 boys and 335 girls.Data were collected by a survey form with 61 questions and SPSS 9.0 program was used to analyze the data statistically. ?Pearson Chi-Square? test was used in the evaluation of the data statistically.59.3% of the population attended the research consists of boy students (n=489), and 40.7% is girl students (n=335). The smoking frequency of the Adıyaman University is defined as %10.8 (n=89) daily and sometimes. 12.9%?of the boy students (n=63) smoke every day and 2.7% (n=13) smokes sometimes. The rate of the girl students smoking everyday is 3.9% (n=13) and there is no student smoking sometimes among the girl students. 1.4% of the boy students (n=7) stopped smoking, 27.6% (n=135) tried smoking and 55.4% (n=271) never smoked before. The rate of quitting smoking among the girl students is %1.5 (n=5), the rate of trying smoking is 21.5% (n=72) and the rate of the never tried before is 73.1% (n=245).The rate of 58.4% (n=59) attended the research has been explained that they started smoking between the 15-18 age. Among the reasons starting smoking is mostly the friends with the rate 28.1% (n=25) and with the same rate is distress 28.1% (n=25). The other reasons for smoking of the students is ?affectation? with the rate of 24.7 % (n=22), ?curiosity? 10.1% (n=9), ?pleasure? with the rate of 3.4% (n=3) and ?dormitory atmosphere? with the rate of 1.1% (n=1).95.8% (n=790) of the all students explained that they supported the Law No 5727 Preventing and Controlling the Damages of Tobacco Products ?completely? and ?at some level?.In the result of the study, to prevent the increasing of the smoking rate in Adıyaman University students and to decrease the current smoking rate, a fighting group should be established especially by the College academic personnel and the doctors and nurses of the Medicosocial unit and in this fighting group, the members should be trained about ?fighting trainer against smoking? and the fighting against smoking should be started with this group in the university.Keywords: Adıyaman University, students, smoking, prevalence, Law No.5727.
