Investigation of maternal and newborn babies toxoplasma profiles with different methods, in Afyon region

INVESTIGATION OF MATERNAL AND NEWBORN BABIESTOXOPLASMA PROFILES WİTH DIFFERENT METHODS, IN AFYONREGIONDR. NİLAY KIYILDISUMMARYCongenital toxoplasmosis is usually an asemptomatic infection when toxoplasmosis isacquired during pregnancy, but there is a risk of severe congenital defects in the fetus. In thisstudy, we aimed to detect toxoplasmosis seropositivity in the blood of mothers and umblicalcords with different methods in our region. Toxoplasma IgG and IgM antibodies wereinvestigated in the blood of 130 mother and 130 umblical cord blood samples which weretaken at birth with the Indirect Florescent Antibody Test (IFAT), Vitek Immuno DiagnosticAssay System (VIDAS) and Multilyte Analyt Platform (MAP) techniques. Seropositivityrates IgG, IgM respectively were found 33.8%, 6.9% in maternal sera, 30%, 0% in cord serawith IFAT, were found 33.8%, 3% in maternal sera, 32.3%, 0% in cord sera with VIDAS,were found 33.8%, 0.8% in maternal sera, 32.3%, 0% in cord sera with MAP technique.The anti-toxoplasma IgG avidity test was performed on both IgG and IgM positive 4maternal sera with VIDAS and 9 maternal sera with IFAT. Two matermal sera had highavidity and one sample had low avidity with VIDAS and also one maternal sera was notevaluate with the same system. Although IFAT avidity results correlated with VIDAS, 6maternal sera could not evaluate with the this system. In order to eliminate false positivereactions, anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA) were investigated in IgM positive sera and 5 serafound positive for ANA.Methods that we used in our study, have some advantages and disadvantages. Howeverthere is not an important difference about seropositivity detection. It is suggested thatsensitivity and specifity will be increased with using spesific antigens for the available andnewly developed commercial toxoplasma kits.
