Cysticercus bovis in slaughtered cattle in Afyonkarahisar and Burdur provinces and its importance from the point of public health

Abstract (EN)

This study was conducted in two provinces (Afyonkarahisar and Burdur) in the western part of Turkey between October 2009 and October 2011. In study period, a total of 1684 head cattle and 7644 human stool samples were examined for C. bovis and taeniosis, respectively. The degenerated C. bovis was determined in 0.24%of cattle by postmortem examination. The occurrence of infection in Afyonkarahisar and Burdur was 0.46% and 0.09%, respectively. The infection rate was determined as 0.13% under two years old and as 1.29% above two years old cattle. While the infection was not observed in male cattle, it was determined as 1.75% only in the heart of female cattle. Taenia sp. eggs were shown in 0.1% of the human stool samples. The infection rate was detected as 0.1% and 0.09% in Afyonkarahisar and Burdur, respectively. Infected humans were between 20 and 59 years old. Infection was observed in 0.06% of male and in 0.15% of female. Also, while infection appeared in 0.21% of stockbreeder, it was only found in 0.08% of not one.
