The study explored the various types of intertextuality in four novels by the Syrian novelist Ahmed Ziad Muhabek. These novels were selected for their importance and role in expressing the social reality in Syria, and for their richness in different types of intertextuality with the Quran, Hadith, literary heritage, popular culture, and historical texts. It is important to note that the lack of any prior study on intertextuality in these novels prompted this research. The study began by elucidating the nature of intertextuality, identifying it as a critical term, and connecting its concept in modern Western studies with similar terms mentioned in ancient Arabic sources, as well as what has emerged among modern Arab critics. The research then traced intertextuality in the four novels of Ahmed Ziad Muhabek, particularly in the characters, events, settings, time, and history, highlighting the positive impact intertextuality had on these novels. It revealed the aesthetic values that emerged through it and assessed the success the novelist achieved in employing it. The significance of this research is manifested in several points: highlighting the aspects of intertextuality in a model of Syrian creativity that drew inspiration from contemporary periods experienced by Syrians, most notably the ongoing war in Syria, and demonstrating the Syrian novel's ability to engage with contemporary times and interact with the manifestations of human suffering in daily life. Additionally, its importance lies in its attempt to shed light on the success of the author who relied on intertextuality in his novels to critically address the reality of Syrian society. The research methodology was guided by Western literary criticism, utilizing the different connotations and multiplicity of terms, especially the types identified by Gérard Genette and other Western researchers. The study adopted an integrative approach, relying on structuralism in the present text of the novel and its connection to other literary texts, engaging in a productive dialogue within scientific frameworks. The research expanded on the concept of intertextuality and aimed to enrich it by linking the texts of the studied novels with other literary and artistic works, clarifying the features of influence and textual interaction between them through an intellectual dialogue, and uncovering the social and moral implications embedded within the depths of these novels' texts. The study focused on providing aspects of psychological analysis of the characters in the studied novels at times and highlighting the social and moral roles of these characters at other times. The research aimed to uncover the artistic role played by intertextuality in the novels, the creative initiatives demonstrated by the author through it, and to elicit the cognitive and aesthetic values behind intertextuality, illustrating its value in constructing the narrative text. The author's creative ability was evident through the employment of interactive semantic platforms, which successfully integrated into the work and hinted at its content. This refers to the book covers, internal and external titles, prefaces, and beginnings. The study showed that the novelist Ahmed Ziad Muhabek derived events in his novels from the reality of the Syrian society he lives in, especially its religious, literary, historical, and popular heritage; hence, the novels came across as realistic and truthful, consistent with the reality of contemporary Syrian society. The research also highlighted how Ahmed Ziad Muhabek excelled in selecting protagonists who are virtuous, spread goodness, and promote knowledge, happiness, and justice in society, depicting these characters in collaboration with figures drawn from religion, history, literature, and proverbs. The novelist aimed to crystallize the aesthetic values he wished to convey to the reader using different types of intertextuality.
