Bicycles for sustainable urban transportation in Alanya

Rapid population growth and industrialization account for the major problems of transportation in large cities. In direct proportion to the rapid population increase, the use of motor vehicles has also increased. Increased number of vehicles causes problems such as noise and air pollution. A necessity of alternative means of transportation to solve these problems is emerging. Bicycle is the most important means of transportation because it is sustainable, healthy, safe and economical. For this purpose, the most cosmopolitan streets of Alanya, namely the Atatürk Street and Prestige Street were analyzed for the purpose of using the comparison method. The article mentions the streets which are suitable for use with bicycles, and if they are not suitable, the issues of why they are not suitable and how to make them convenient are addressed. Accordingly, varied field research had been made and the data obtained from the studies were analyzed at the end of the research. In the conclusion part, the importance of the use of bicycles is given. In the proposal part, the area which starts from Dimçayı Bridge in the eastern Alanya to the western tunnels, and the road 35 meter long in its north as well as the area up to the D400 in the south are suggested along with the locations including Alaaddin Keykubat University in Kestel neighborhood, new Alanya Municipal Building located in Oba Neighborhood, The District Hospital, Dental Hospital, Metro, stadium and Koçtaş Shopping Center, Alanyum and 5M Migros Shopping Centers in the same route, Alanya Hamdullah Emin Pasha University in Cikcilli Neighborhood and Damlataş Street connection to the telpher line. For the determination of routes, the most suitable places for cycling routes were tried to be identified. Finally, the thesis work aims both the elimination of the environmental problems and extension of the sustainable transportation in Alanya region thanks to the promotion of transportation with bicycles.
