Abstract (EN)

After a brief overview of the experience of space in architecture, this thesis initially addresses the interconnectedness between human senses and architectural space and the influence of that relationship on our everyday life activities. It further explores the vital concepts to nuance the misunderstood visual experience of space by challenging the arbitrary prioritization of vision in architecture, and the dominance of visually-based techniques in a digitally-driven era. By questioning concepts like ocularcentrism, and by exploring non-visual architectural terms, such as aural space, and the experiences of sightless individuals, the research seeks to establish a more comprehensive understanding of spatial interactions involving all human senses. Aiming to fill the gap in architectural scholarship, this research emphasizes the significance of understanding and experiencing space beyond mathematical measurements, using a phenomenological lens. The research adopts a qualitative approach to explore the subjective and experiential aspects of architectural design. By delving into architectural phenomenology, the study analyzes individual perceptions, consciousness, and bodily experiences to gain a holistic understanding of space. The main objective of this study is to contribute to a nuanced understanding of spatial experience, informing architects about the diverse ways individuals interact with architectural spaces. It advocates for a more inclusive approach to design that considers all vii human senses, fostering environments that enhance well-being, functionality, and cultural alignment. The study encourages a reevaluation of architectural concepts inherited from the past, particularly the relevance of ocularcentrism in the context of contemporary design practices.
