m NOISE CONTROL AND CONSTRUCTUAL PREVENTIONS AT SHOPPING CENTERS: TWO EXAMPLES IN ANKARA (M.Sc Thesis) Kader DEMİR GAZt UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY January 2003 ABSTRACT Shopping is one of the most important concepts of human beings. Shopping spaces have some characteristics for different societies and times. By the progressing of shopping centers, noise problem started to affect these buildings. In this thesis, the subject of noise control was explained because of the necessitates that realizing the shopping action, protecting the health of human, intelligible talking etc In this thesis, some of the concepts, which are about noise, room acoustics and shopping have been explained. After that, information has been given about progressing of shopping centers. First, the historical development of the shopping action has been mentioned. After that, the formation of shopping centers has been examined under the titles of shopping spaces in ancient Greek and Roma and in Anatolia, traditional Turkish shopping spaces and effects of Industrial Revolution on the development of shopping centers. Transformation of commercial spaces of Ankara into modern styled shopping centers has been studied as an appendix part. Besides, the noise problems of shopping centers have been determined.
