Ottoman period coins at the Amasya Museum

Coins, which were pressed as a means of trade and ensures that information about centuries ago reached today in its original form, are among the sources that provide reliable evidence to history. The writing, dates and motifs on the coins are very important in terms of providing clear information about the conditions of the period in which they started. Amasya has hosted many different civilizations throughout history. It is also among the important prince sanjaks of the Ottoman state. Therefore, many movable and immovable material remains belonging to different periods have survived in Amasya. Among these remains, coins have an important place. The subject of our research is the Ottoman period coins at the Amasya Museum. As far as we can examine, there is no study that systematically examines and introduces these coins in detail with the discipline of art history and evaluates them in all their aspects. For this reason, the aim of the study is to examine, chronologically classify, photograph, read, catalog and evaluate the coins within the scope of the research. With our study, we aim to instoduce the Ottoman period Amasya coins belonging to a very large period. In our thesis study, selected from 3460 Ottoman coins registered in the Amasya Museum inventory, 181 coins dated between the 14th and 20th centruies were included in the catalogue. Attention was paid to the fact that the coins included in the catalog belong to different sultans and have different currencies. The eairliest dated coins belong to the period of Bayezid I (H. 792/M. 1389), and the latest dated one belongs to the period of Mehmed Reşad V (H. 1327/M. 1909). 2 coins are embroidered and there is no writing or date on them. The coins in the catalog were transcribed, and their material, measurement and decoration features were explained in detail. With the data obtained as a result of the examination; coins were evaluated in terms of minting place, minting date, material, writing, tugra and decoration. We hope that the analysis and explanation of the coins will help many disciplines, especially art history.
