Operating room professionals' patient safety attitudes in relation to specific contributing factors

Abstract (EN)
Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine the contributing factors related to operating room professionals' patient safety attitudes. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive design was employed. The study sample comprised 477 operation room professionals (medical doctors -academic board members, research assistants-, nurses and anesthesia technicians) working in both university and training and research hospitals in İzmir (Turkey). The data were collected between March-December 2014. In statistical analysis t-test, one-way analysis of variance in independent groups, scheffle analysis and multiple regression analysis were used. Results: Operating room professionals' is moderate. patient safety attitude scores were found to be at a moderate level, as contibuting factors. Teamwork climate had the highest score whereas stres recognition had the lowest. Age, resting state, orientation training, in-service training, experience duration in profession, institutions and units were the other factors contibuted to the healthcare professionals' patient safety attitudes. Conclusion: Light of findings above, following actions can be recommended to healthcare managers/leaders within the scope of patient safety improvement: regulating working conditions by offering flexibility and reducing overtime working hours within the legal framework, enhancing patient safety training programmes specific orientation programmes and last but not least adopting a leadership approach that supports health professionals to establish safety culture.
