Filmmaking in Turkey in the context of mainstream and art cinema

Film production is one of the most important fields of cinema. Production has been an integral part of cinema for movies. The first production activities in Turkey are seen in the army, as in many countries. With the establishment of Army Film Department, production activities started in Turkey. In the early years of cinema, generally the same person used the camera, edited the film and screened the film. With the development of cinema in the following periods, production has also changed. Today, the producer is the person who provides all the economic conditions for the emergence of a film. Today, cinema includes different understandings such as mainstream cinema and art cinema. Mainstream cinema and art cinema, which differ from each other in terms of content, also differ in terms of production. These differences emerge in the fields of production, distribution and display. For this reason, production should be divided into two as mainstream film production and art film production. Because in the process from the preparation stage of a film to its meeting with the audience, it is seen that production in mainstream cinema and art cinema has different working methods and goals. In the study, the difference, functioning and problems of mainstream film production and art film production are discussed. In this context, interviews were held with producers operating in Turkey. Opinions of producers on mainstream film production and art film production were taken. The interviews were analyzed with descriptive analysis, one of the qualitative research techniques.
