Evaluation of the effect of fatigue on quality of life in anemic patients

This study was conducted to determine the effect of fatigue observed in individuals diagnosed with anemia on their quality of life. The research is descriptive and cross-sectional in design, and the sample of the study consisted of a group of 300 patients in the Internal Medicine and Hematology Clinic of Gaziantep City Hospital. The study data were collected between February 08, 2025 and July 20, 2025 using the "Sociodemographic Information Form", the "SF-12 Quality of Life Scale" and the "Chalder Fatigue Scale". In the statistical analysis, descriptive statistics, correlation and regression analyses were used. According to the Chalder Fatigue Scale, the mean fatigue score of the participants was found to be 17.39±5.11, and physical fatigue was found to be higher than mental fatigue among the participants. The mean score of the SF-12 physical quality of life was 38.87±6.97, while the mean score of mental quality of life was 33.23±5.96. A significant and negative relationship was determined between fatigue level and both physical quality of life (r= -0.675; p<0.001) and mental quality of life (r= -0.438; p<0.001). According to the regression analysis, fatigue explains 45% of the variance in physical quality of life and 19% of the variance in mental quality of life. Fatigue levels in individuals with anemia were found to be above average, and it significantly reduces quality of life, particularly in the physical dimension. In future studies, it is recommended to compare the relationship between fatigue and quality of life in different types of anemia and in larger sample groups.
