Disinfection of the anaesthesia machine: Comparison of the effectiveness of Actosept® and Bacoban®

Abstract (EN)
Operation room devices are well searched about nosocomial infection sourcesand disinfection. Nevertheless there aren?t enough studies about anaesthesiamachine.The aim of this clinical study is to determine the contamination of theanesthesia machine with a prospective manner and to provide safety of the operatingroom with comparison of two disinfectants (actosept, bacoban).12 operating room were divided into two groups; hospital (Group H)(n=6) andBacoban group (Group B)(n=6). Anaesthesists haven?t been informed about thedisinfection procedures and groups.In both groups, anaesthesia machines were disinfected with actosept at 07:00am in the morning. At 07:30 am, swabs were taken from five different regions ofanaesthesia machines.(breathing system bag, vaporiser dials, flow control knobs,adjustible pressure limiting (APL) valve, aspirator switch)According to the rcommdaions of the ?hospital infection control committee?,every morning disinfection of anesthesia machines were continued with Actocept inGroup H.In the first day, for Group B bacoban spray was applied to the surfaces ofanesthesia machines for disinfection, after taking swabs. Than during 15 days nodisinfection was applied.For both groups, 150 swabs were taken; in the first day before theoperations,than 1., 5., 10. And 15. days at 17:00. Swabs were culturated andprocessed by a microbiologist who was?nt aware of the group that sample belong to.4The results were loaded to SPSS 15.0 programme. For statistical analysis, pearsonchi-square, fisher?s exact test and McNemar tests were used. p<0.05 was taken assignificant.Although statistically insignificant, in Group H there was more growth (%40.66)in cultures compared to Group B (%32.66). At the and of the first day the diferencebetween groups(Group B(%16.6), Group H(%40)) was significant (p=0.045). the mostcontaminated region was identified as the breathing system bag. Coagualse negativestaphylococci was the most identified microorganism of all.In conclusion; we found that anesthesia machines are highly contaminatedwith microorganisms. Actosept and Bacoban aren?t effective enough for prevention.It is concluded that multidisciplinary studies and further researches are neededabout eradication or reduction of the contamination on the anesthesia machines.Key words: Anesthesia machines, Disinfection, Bacoban, Actosept
