Abstract (EN)
The city center, which is often emphasized as the "brain" of the city, is where urban services and activities are mostly concentrated. The city center displays not only the concentration of high quality services but also important problems. In order to provide a comprehensive solution to these problems which appear more densely in metropoliten cities, the physical, socio economic and cultural dimensions must be considered. However, such an exercise certainly entails many difficulties. This thesis is an open-ended study which aims at defining the somewhere of different centers, chosen as case studies to contribute towards a general evaluation of the city center. A detailed data base on the chosen centers has thus been established which currently provides a photographic display but will later lead to a more detailed analysis on the evolution of city centers and their functions.
