Determination of the prevalence of eye diseases in cats and dogs in Antalya province

Ocular disorders constitute a significant proportion of the health issues encountered in domestic pet animals. Over recent years, there has been a marked increase in the incidence of eye diseases. The primary aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of ocular diseases in cats and dogs in Antalya province, based on data obtained from two private veterinary Clinic and the one Animal Hospital, by evaluating the physiological and morphological characteristics of the affected patients. The study sample comprised 10,212 pet animals that were presented to Petvet Veterinary Clinic, Empathy Veterinary Clinic, and the European Animal Hospital between 2018 and 2024. A total of 3,402 of these animals were diagnosed with ocular diseases, and data were collected based on breed, age, gender, and diagnosis. Among these patients, 1,685 were cats. The observed ocular diseases in these cats were as follows: membrana nictitans gland prolapse (0% ) (n: 0), ectropion (0% ) (n: 0), glaucoma (23.3% ) (n: 392), foreign bodies in the eye (3.7% ) (n: 62), cataract (0% ) (n: 0), conjunctivitis (15.2% ) (n: 256), keratoconjunctivitis (12.2% ) (n: 205), keratitis (11.4% ) (n: 192), entropion (5.3% ) (n: 89), corneal ulcer (2.8% ) (n: 48), corneal dermoid (0% ) (n: 0), traumatic exophthalmia (1% ) (n: 17), traumatic hyphema (1.5% ) (n: 26), and uveitis (23.6% ) (n: 398). Among the 1,717 dog patients, the following ocular conditions were noted me glanmbrana nictitans gland prolapse (3% ) (n: 52), ectropion (0.2% ) (n: 4), conjunctivitis (15% ) (n: 258), keratitis (3.4% ) (n: 59), entropion (2.7% ) (n: 46), glaucoma (14.6% ) (n: 251), foreign bodies in the eye (4.4% ) (n: 76), cataract (7.9% ) (n: 136), keratoconjunctivitis (14.8% ) (n: 254), corneal ulcer (0.5% ) (n: 9), corneal dermoid (0.3% ) (n: 6), traumatic exophthalmia (2.4% ) (n: 42), traumatic hyphema (2.6% ) (n: 44), and uveitis (28% ) (n: 480). Uveitis was the most frequently observed ocular disease in both cats and dogs, surpassing other conditions in prevalence. Among the cat breeds, domestic shorthair cats exhibited the highest prevalence at 80.2% , while among dog breeds, mixed-breed dogs demonstrated a prevalence of 74.2% . Furthermore, the prevalence of ocular diseases was higher in younger cats, particularly those aged 1 year, while in dogs, the highest prevalence was observed in the 0-1 year age group. In conclusion, ocular diseases were more commonly observed and recorded in younger patients, with a higher incidence in those within the early stages of life.
