Comparing the application style of modern architecture through arki̇tekt and architectural forum magazi̇nes: Case of Turkey and Ameri̇ca

Modernism has shown its influence in many fields such as art, science and philosophy; it has radically changed the perspective and lifestyle of the society. With the changing living conditions, buildings were started to be built in accordance with the conditions of the period; in this direction, certain criteria were applied in order to respond to the requirements of the period and to ensure the integrity of language in the buildings. Architectural competitions, congresses and exhibitions have been effective in determining and disseminating these criteria. The International Style Exhibition, one of these events, enabled the determination and global dissemination of modern building criteria. These practices were generally referred to as the Modern Movement Movement and became influential in the 1930s. The criteria determined within the scope of the Modern Movement were expected to be applied everywhere. The present study, on the other hand, aims to explain comparatively how the Modern Movement criteria are applied in different countries, arguing that each country has different economic, geographical and cultural conditions. At this point, two different countries, Turkey and the USA, were selected for comparison and Arkitekt and Architectural Forum Magazines, which had similar perspectives of the period, were analysed. Accordingly, residential buildings in Turkey through Arkitekt Magazine and in America through Architectural Forum Magazine between 1932 and 1937 are analysed in detail within the scope of facade, plan and interior. As a result of the analyses, the similarities and differences in the given examples are pointed out and it is explained what kind of formal characteristics the Modern Movement criteria cause under different conditions.
