THE MANUFACTURE and DESIGN A WEAR MACHINE TEST SETUP and INVESTIGATION STUDY on WEAR BEHAVIOR of METAL MATRIX COMPOSITES (M. So. Thesis) Abdulmecit GÜLDAŞ GAZİ UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY September 1998 ABSTRACT The design and manufacture of a Pin-On-Disc type wear machine has been carried out to evaluate the characteristic of the composite materials. The dry wear of 5-alumina fibre-reinforced zinc-aluminium based alloy composites produced by squeeze casting has been investigated using the manufactured the wear test machine. Metal matrix composites were tested in the normal and planar-random orientations sliding against a smooth hardened steel counter disc at a fixed speed under different loads. Wear surfaces of composites and their matrix alloy have also been examined in a optical microscope. The experimental results have showed that the composite indicated low wear rate comparing to the base alloy. The wear rate has decreased with an increase in volume fraction of fibre, and increased with increasing load. In the investigate using optic microscope, although normal orientated indicate to take form micro fibre cracks and to be buried matrix, planer random orientated indicate bigger scale fibre cracs so, this cause delamination wear. In addition, abrasive wear is observed to be more effect. In the width perpendicular crosssection, depth of deformation of normal orientated composites less than planer random orientated composites.
