The assocation between sleep quality and asthma quality, pulmonary functions and asthma quality of life in asthmatic patients

AIM: Sleep quality may be affected by night symptoms in asthmatic patients. We aimed to investigate the relationship between pulmonary functions, disease control and quality of life with sleep quality in asthmatics patiets.METHOD: A total number of stable 126 patients from 7 research-education and university hospitals and 40 healthy controls were included in the study. Medical history of the patients and controls were recorded. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Scale (PSQS) was applied to all study population. Asthma Control Test (ACT), asthma quality of life questionnaire (AQLQ) and pulmonary function tests (PFT) were performed in asthmatic patients.RESULTS: Mean age of the patients (82% female) was 40±9,9. 79% of the patients had mild asthma. Mean ACT was 18.5±4.85, mean PSQS was 7.02±3.86 and mean total AQLQ was 4.43±1.16. Sleep efficiency was found to be 83±19% in asthmatic patients and 39% had healthy sleep, 61% had bad sleep. Having a FEV1<80% value (p=0.750) and level of disease severity (p=0.550) were not found to affect sleep quality. However, as the ACT (r=-0.324, p<0.001) and AQLQ (r=-0.299, p<0.001) increased, sleep quality was determined to be increased. A significant difference was observed in the sleep quality between the patients (7.02±3,86) and healthy controls (3.95±2,18) (p<0.001).CONCLUSION: Sleep quality is impaired in asthmatic patients with respect to controls. The correlation between disease control and sleep quality impairments seems to be very important regarding the quality of life of asthmatic patients.
