THE MYTH OF ATREUS FAMILY IN ANCIENT AND MODERN DRAMAZehra Ç ÇEKÇABSTRACTThe present thesis is a research on the myth of Atreus family regarded as aliterary tradition having a variety of textual representation in ancient and modern drama,namely Oresteia by Aeschylus, Electra by Sophocles, Electra by Euripides, MourningBecomes Electra by E. O?Neill, and The Flies by J.-P. Sartre. These plays are discussedas different ancient and modern versions of the myth of Atreus family on amethodological basis consisting of the theory of the ethno-religious myth, in general,and, in particular, the myth of Atreus family as literary myth. The essential referencepoints of our study constitute the theoretical and critical contributions of, among others,Brunel, Freidenberg, Frye, Eliade, Groden and Kreiswirth, and Priest. The principlesand methods of research applied in our study represent a combination of methodsconsidered according to the material under research: philological, comparative,typological, as well as a number of methods and principles related to myth-criticism,text analysis, intertextualism, thematology, and literary theory. The structure of thethesis corresponds to the proposed objectives and consists of an introductory section,followed by two chapters, each chapter comprising a number of subchapters, which arefollowed by a section of conclusions, representing our final reflections, and by thebibliography of literary texts and critical studies, and the index.
