Turkey's position in European Union security and defence policy

Abstract (EN)

This study is composed of five parts: The first part covers theoretical analyses of the threat and security, the theories of power and threat balance, development of the asymetric threats on global scale and how security assumptions changed in history and today. In the second part, European integration theories are reviewed in historical process, enlargement and deepening processes of European Union are discussed in the context of these theories and some envisions are made for the future. In the third part, main approaches on development of the European security and defence policies after Second World War and institutional security concepts are handled. In addition, the amendments of European Constitution related to ESDP and some analyses about the future of ESDP are discussed. In the fourth part, the effects of NATO and US on Europe?s security policies are discussed in detail. On the other hand, some assessments are made about how ESDP and NATO effects each other in future. Lastly, in the light of the Wallerstein?s ?World System?, the effects of new global powers to ESDP are analyzed. In the fifth part, regional and global developments effecting Turkey?s foreign policy are discussed, the importance and the position of Turkey in ii ESDP are reviewed and some assessments are made about Turkey?s possible roles for the security of EU in future.
