Abstract (EN)

This thesis investigated that some tree bark extracts could increase the resistance of wood against outdoor conditions. Ten different barks were used, such as Chestnut (Castanea sativa L.), Alder (Alnus glutinosa L.), Scots pine (Pinus silvestris L.), Red pine (Pinus brutia L.), Oak (Quercus pontica L.), Black pine (Pinus nigra L.), Eastern Black Sea, fir (Abies nordmannia L.), Orientalis beech (Fagus orientalis L.), Orientalis Spruce (Picea orientalis L.), Taurus Cedar (Cedrus libani L.). These barks were extracted with hot water solubility containing 1% NaOH. Surface protection agents were prepared using extractive material, polyethylene glycol (PEG), acetic acid, and purified water. Surface protection agents were applied to scots pine (Pinus silvestris L.) and oriental spruce (Picea orientalis L.) wood species with the help of a brush, and their protective effect against external factors was investigated. The resistance of the wood samples (test) treated with surface protection agent to outdoor conditions was investigated by artificial outdoor test for 480 hours. After the artificial outdoor test, the surface color change, roughness change, macroscopic and microscopic changes of the test samples were examined. The effects of the surface protection agent on the wood's water uptake rate, water repellency, expansion amount, anti-expansion activity, and pressure resistance parallel to the fibers were also analyzed. After the artificial weathering test, it was understood that the preservative performance on the spruce wood surface was higher than the Scots pine wood. Preservatives containing chestnut and cedar bark extracts enhanced the water-repellent and anti-expansion effect of both wood types. In general, the performance of surface protection agents containing bark extract in outdoor conditions was higher in Scots pine wood than spruce wood. However, it has been understood that surface protection agents developed from bark extract can protect semi-open or fully closed spaces due to their high washing properties. Especially since it is an organic and environmentally friendly product, it can be recommended to be used in playgrounds, park and garden furniture, covered verandas in semi-open or fully closed places where people are in contact.
