Abstract (EN)

ABSTRACT Master of Science Thesis THE STUDIES ON THE SYNYHESIS AND STRUCTURE ELUCIDATIONS, INVESTIGATION OF MUTAGENIC, CYTOTOXIC AND ANTIPROLIFERATIVE EFFECTS OF SOME SUBSTITUTED BENZYLIDENEANILINE DERIVATIVES Pharm. Yusuf ÖZKAY Anadolu University Institute Of Health Science 'Department Of Pharmaceutical Chemistry Supervisor: Prof. Dr. İlhan IŞIKDA? FEBRUARY 2005 In this thesis, ten compounds which include benzilideneaniline nuclei were synthesized by the standart method of obtaining Schiff bases. Benzaidehyde derivatives and aniline were subjected to condensation reaction under acidic condition in ethanol. Some of the synthesized compounds were purified by recrystallization and their structure elucidations were performed by spectroscopic methods. Melting points of each compounds were measured and compared with melting points value in literature. The cytotoxic, mutagenic and antiproliferative effects of the substituted benzylideneaniline compounds were determined by MTT, Ames Salmonella/ microzome tests and cell proliferation ELISA, BrdU kit, respectively. In this study to obtain knowledges about physicochemical parameters of the coumponds, steric, eloctronic and some hydrofobic parameter values were calculated by using table values; RM hydrofobic parameter values were also established by experimental data. Key Words: Substitute benzilydeneaniline, Schiff base, cytotoxic effect, MTT, mutagenic effect, Ames Salmonella I microzome test, antiproliferative effect. 11
