Abstract (EN)

ABSTRACT SOME ESSENTIAL OILS AND THEIR COMPONENTS OF CONTACT TOXICITY, REPELLENT AND OVTPOSITION DETERRENT ON Frankliniella occidentalis (PERGANDE) (THYSANOPTERA:THRD?DDAE) İLKNUR GÖREN M. Sc. thesis in Department of Plant Protection Adviser: Prof. Dr. İrfan TUNÇ September, 2001, 42 pages In this study, contact toxicity, repellency, developmental and reproduction inhibitory effects of plant essential oils, extracted from aniseed (Pimpinella anisum L.), cumin (Cuminum cymiman L.), thyme (Orygamim syriacum var bevanii Holmess), garden sage (Salvia officinalis L.) and laurel (Laurus nobilis L.), and essential oil components, anethole, thymol, carvacrol, eucalyptol (1,8 cineole) and jo-cymene on Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), an important greenhouse pest, were investigated. In the all tests except repellency, the second instar female larvae of F. occidentalis were used. The dosages of materials were used as 25, 50, 100 and 200 ppm for contact toxicity experiments, 2, 4, and 8 ul/1 for repellency experiments and 1.9, 3.8 and 7.6 mg/1 for oviposition experiments. It is determined that all essential oil reduced fecundity of F. occidentalis and egg hatching. However, no effects on incubation period, on duration of development, and oviposition period and longevity were determined. It is determined that while contact and repellent effects of both essential oils and their components on F. occidentalis were not significant, components have a higher repellency and contact toxicity than essential oils. inKEY WORDS: Greenhouse pests, Frankliniella occidentalis, Essential oils, Essential oil components, Repellency, Contact toxicity, Development and reproduction inhibition COMMITTEE: Prof. Dr. İrfan TUNÇ Assoc.
