Investigation of the acute effect of baby-carrier on postural balance in babies and their mothers

Carrying a baby is an inherent and prevalent human behavior that has been observed throughout the entirety of human history. It is a customary practice in numerous cultures worldwide. The employment of baby-carriers remains widespread due to its positive impact on enhancing the emotional bond between the baby and the mother or caregiver, while concurrently facilitating the carrier's mobility and flexibility. This study was conducted, encompassing a cohort of 30 infants aged between 4 and 10 months. These infants, along with their respective mothers, were referred to the Healthy Child Department, the Department of Pediatrics, and the Department of Pediatric Neurology at Bezmialem Vakıf University Medical Faculty Hospital. The investigations were carried out within the Gait Analysis Laboratory situated at Altunizade Acıbadem Hospital. The present scientific investigation aims to explore the immediate effects of baby-carriers on postural balance in both infants and their mothers. To achieve this objective, a comprehensive evaluation was undertaken, including the administration of a demographic assessment form for the participating infants and their respective mothers. During the completion of the demographic information form, the mothers who volunteered for the study and fulfilled the predetermined inclusion criteria underwent height (m) and weight (kg) measurements performed by a research physiotherapist. Furthermore, body mass index (BMI) calculations were derived using the weight (kg) divided by the square of the height (m). In addition to these anthropometric measurements, measurements of the range of motion in the hip joint were conducted. Subsequently, utilizing a sophisticated 3D motion analysis system (VICON), alterations in the center of gravity and postural balance were evaluated during various activities. These activities encompassed normal walking for a duration of 15 minutes, carrying babies on the lap for 15 minutes, carrying babies in a front-facing position using a baby-carrier for 15 minutes, and carrying babies on the back for 15 minutes utilizing baby-carriers.Through this comprehensive methodology, the acute effects of baby-carriers on postural balance in both infants and their mothers will be examined, shedding light on the intricate dynamics involved in this mode of carrying and its impact on the overall balance of the individuals involved.
