The relationship of self-construal with suicide and problem solving skills

Abstract (EN)
In this study, it was aimed to investigate the relationship of self-construal with suicidal behaviors and problem solving skills. Additionally, the suicidal behaviors of the individuals having autonomous, relational and autonomous-related self-construal and the effects of the social problem solving skills on this relationship have been examined. Research sample consists of 830 voluntary students (564 women, 266 men) from the different departments of Adnan Menderes University. The findings of the analyses showed that the individuals having suicidal ideation, suicidal attempt and suicidal behaviors have higher scores in autonomous-self construal area. Whereas, students who do not have any suicidal ideation, suicidal attempt or behaviors have higher scores in related-self construal area. Findings also showed that students who have suicidal ideation and attempts have lower social problem solving skills. Individuals who have autonomous self-construal have higher social problem solving skills than the ones who have related self-construal. Findings also showed that a relationship between self-construal and social problem solving skills. In conclusion, both of the self-construal and social problem solving skills have a statistically significant effect on suicidal behavior.
