Abstract (EN)

Over the last few years, sustainable design has started to play an increasingly vital role in the construction of bridges. Designing for a sustainable bridge is complex and requires the consideration of many variables, from the design approach, to the materials used to its associated costs over its lifetime. To get a better grasp on the concept, this thesis is prepared. It contains modeling and the analysis of bridges with the SAP2000 software and synthesizing the existing practices in sustainable structural design applicable to bridges. The main focus of this thesis is to investigate this newly developed sustainability concept for horizontal structures. Thesis consists of eight chapters. In the first chapter, introduction and objectives of the study are given. In the second chapter literature review, sustainability, current sustaninability rules are given. In the third chapter applications related sustainability of buildings and bridges are studied separately. Forth chapter gives information about brdidge types used in Turkey. The bridges having two, four and five spans considered for numerical analysis are presented in fifth chapter and the SAP2000 numerical models of these bridges are given in the sixth chapter. The numerical results and behavior of those bridges (piers) are given under vertical and seismic effects. The linear time history analysis of the bridges and the static push-over analysis of piers are carried out. In the last chapter of this thesis the seismic risk assessment of reinforced concrete bridges with respect to sustainability point of view are given.
