Abstract (EN)

This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of taeniid cestode eggs in shepherd dogs and metacestode infections in intermediate host sheep in the Beyşehir region. In this context, the prevalence of infections were compared according to sex and age. The prevalence of taeniid eggs in dogs was determined as 2.7% by flotation method, while it was determined as 10.1% by cellophane tape method. The difference between the flotation method and cellophane tape method was found to be statistically significant (P<0.01). When the prevalence of taeniid eggs was compared according to age groups and gender, the difference was not found to be statistically significant. A post-slaughter examination of 607 sheep was performed in Beyşehir region slaughterhouses in terms of the presence of metasestodes. Cysticercus tenuicollis was detected in 33 (5.4%), Coenurus cerebralis in 18 (3.0%) and hydatid cyst in 27 (4.4%) of the sheep examined. There was no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of metasestode infections in sheep compared by gender and age. The prevalence of taeniid cestode infections in both shepherd dogs and metasestode infections in sheep was determined at low levels. The correlation between taeniid sestode and metasestode infections in sheepdogs and shepherd dogs was remarkable. It was concluded that the cellophane tape method may be more sensitive than the fecal flotation method in detecting Taenia sp. eggs in dogs.
