Das vertraute unvertraute: reisen, begegnungen, orte und erinnerungen in Judith Hermanns ausgewählten erzählungen

Judith Hermann is one of the youngest female writers of Germany. She made name for herself not only with her books but also with her interviews. She was born in Berlin in 1970. Hermann went to USA after her education of journalism. There she discovered her passion for writing. After then she returned to Germany and in 1998 she published her first book "Sommerhaus, später". This book was translated into seventeen different languages including the Turkish language. Not only in German boarders but also in countries in which those languages are spoken she captured the headlines. Hermann could not stay quit on this sympathy on her. She wrote numerous (short) stories and a novel. Thus, Hermann consolidate her special position in German Contemporary Literature. She enlightened the following topics, the complicated inside and outside of the individual's world, the longing for love, journeys to far countries, memories collected on journays. The academic world showed also sympathy to her. In many universities all over the world Hermanns works were examined from content, linguistic and structural point of view. In academic studies the importance of the stories for today was stressed by Judith Hermann. The aim of this thesis is examining the reflection in the mirror of today's generation who could not hold on to life. This thesis consists of three parts. On the first part todays time period and the characteristics of this period were explained. Also, the female writers who figured large in forming this period and their place in modern literature were discussed. On the second part of the thesis there are seven selected stories. These stories were analysed in terms of journeys, encounterings, places and memories. By means of this analysis in terms of German Contemporary Literature many important points were brought out through quotations and sources. On the last part of the thesis the language fact which is very important these days was illustrated.
