Tile as an artifact or as a material

Tile, which has perhaps the most and diverse usage area among our arts from the past to the present, has a very important place in Turkish ceramic art. With its durability, multi-colored, wide usage area and aesthetic elements, tile has been preferred in various parts of architectural works, especially as a decorative coating material, and the development of architecture and tile has continued in parallel. Apart from tile architecture, it also appears as usage items. It is seen that these products are also produced as daily food and beverage containers such as plates, bowls, jugs, and items used in different areas such as trinket, toy, stool, oil lamp, pen box. Tile, which also contains the aesthetic and artistic understanding of the period in which it was made, has been examined in this thesis study in terms of being evaluated as a material or work. The first examples of the use of ceramics in architecture in Turks go back to the Uygur period. Since the use of ceramics in Turkish history covers a wide period, the subject of study is limited to Turkish ceramics with the characteristics of Seljuk and Ottoman period tiles. ıt is thought that this study, which was carried out with the aim of giving a new perspective to the tile produced and used for quite different purposes today, will be beneficial in terms of giving an idea about the properties of tile as a material or artifact to tile artists, architects and experts working in different disciplines who have set their hearts on tile art and will be trained in the future.
