Abstract (EN)

The cranes, which are the mostly used tools for transporting heavy loads, are generallyoperated manually. This causes unwanted oscillatory movement of the load, so constitutesdanger to surroundings and workers.In this work, we intended to get the desired position with minimum oscillation of the load byusing two different control methods. We deal with widely used crane construction: theoverhead crane. We obtained system models, system characteristics and the transfer function.Control designs in s-domain, time domain and frequency domain are presented. PIDcontrollers and Genetic Algorithms are explained in detail.PID controllers and genetic algorithms are chosen as controllers and by taking intoconsideration of those two controllers; the system responses obtained for each. First we foundcoefficients (Kc, Ti, Td - Kp, Ki, Kd) by using Ziegler-Nichols method. The computedcoefficients were used for system and obtained outputs. These processes are obtained fromMatlab command lines and simulation.Genetic algorithms, whose main principle is ?only the best survive?, are applied to the systemby using ISE performance index and the coefficients, which produce minimum error, areobtained. After all simulations were done; conclusions were drawn based on responses of thesystem to PID and genetic algorithms methods. Conclusions and comparisons are dealt with atthe end of the thesis.
