Abstract (EN)

Cool storage as one of the thermal energy storage systems saves money because of different electricity costs in daytimes. Cooling load is generally demanded during the daytimes besides of the night time in which electricity cost is relatively cheap. Cool storage systems store cool energy during off-peak hours and use the stored energy for cooling purposes at the on-peak hours. Using a cool storage system which met average cooling load instead of cooling system which met maximum cooling load, reduce investment cost. In this study, cool energy storage by ice formation on spiral pipes which are placed in a cool energy storage tank were examined experimentally and numerically for different values of the volumetric flow rate of the coolant and environment temperature. Additionally, energy analysis of the cooling system was also examined. By using of the experimental results, two systems with and without a cool storage tank which were met cooling demand of two environments which were an office and a residence daily cooling load 80000 kJ were compared separately and the cost analysis was made. According to the electric tariff in Turkey, the cost analysis showed that the residence usage of the system with cool storage tank was more economic during the peak cost tariff. But the office usage, the system without cool storage tank was found to be more economic under the assumption of daytime cooling demand.
