Analysing efficiency scores of coal enterprises by fuzzy data envelopment analysis

With the emerging economy, industrialization and population increase, the energy demand of our country is increasing every year. Our country has difficulty in meeting the increasing energy demand with domestic energy sources at its current production capacity and is applying for the import of energy resources. When it is thought that the most used fuel in electricity generation is coal and our country is rich in terms of lignite reserves, it is inevitable to tend to coal mine in energy production. However, our country can not efficiently use existing coal reserves. Reserves must be operated efficiently and productively in order to increase coal production. Achieving this depends on optimum use of resources. Data Envelopment Analysis is a method that helps businesses investigate whether they are efficiently using the resources and compare the efficiency of businesses to similar businesses. The purpose of this thesis is to test the applicability of classical and fuzzy data envelopment analysis methods to coal mining enterprises, to examine the efficiencies of the enterprises affiliated to Turkish Coal Enterprises, one of the leading companies in coal production, and to compare the results of the two methods used. As a result of the analyzes performed, efficient and inefficient enterprises have been identified and suggestions for improvement have been given to give an idea of efficient operation. In addition, it has been found that classical and fuzzy data envelopment analysis methods are similar in that the efficiency rankings of the enterprises and both methods are suitable for evaluating the efficiencies of coal mining enterprises.
