Abstract (EN)

This study examines the cultural, social and economic importance of the shepherding profession in Burdur folk culture. Within the scope of the study, the tools used by shepherds, technological influences on the profession and traditions that are about to be lost were investigated. Field studies were conducted in rural Burdur, interviews were conducted with 67 shepherds and their daily lives were witnessed. During the research process, physical and logistical obstacles were encountered, such as the settlement of shepherds over large distances in the highlands, access and communication difficulties. The research was conducted between 15.12.2022 - 15.03.2024 and aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of Burdur's shepherding culture by combining traditional and modern elements. As a result of the research, it was seen that shepherding in Burdur folk culture is not only an economic activity, but also a cultural, social and ecological heritage. Thanks to their strong ties with nature, shepherds have accumulated significant knowledge in areas such as folk botany, folk medicine, folk veterinary medicine and folk meteorology. In addition, it has been determined that the shepherding profession is shaped by rituals, social solidarity and seasonal cycles, and shepherds are associated with wisdom, leadership and respect in folk culture. Shepherding, which combines traditional methods with modern elements, has been defined as an important way of life that reflects the richness of Burdur culture.
