Ideology in the interpretation of the Qur'an in contemporary period: Fî Zilâli'l-Kur'ân's sample

Sayyid Qutb's (d. 1966) interpretation should be evaluated as a product of his efforts to approach the Qur'an as a guide that builds a worldview, rather than the literal or narration-based approaches of the classical commentators. His work, Fi Zilali'l-Quran, aimed to determine what kind of stance a Muslim should take in the contemporary world through verses. In this respect, Qutb's interpretation includes an ideological approach that prioritizes transformation. Qutb does not see the message of the Quran as merely individual morality, on the contrary, he emphasizes the power of revelation to shape society. According to him, the Quran has the potential to transform not only societies that lived in the past, but also contemporary societies, which he considers as modern ignorance. For him, interpretation is not merely an interpretation, but a call to struggle, a mobilization of consciousness. This intertwining of ideology and interpretation reveals that in Qutb's thought, ideology is an orientation derived from the Qur'an. Many concepts, from the legitimacy of government to social justice, from individual responsibility to Islamic awakening, have gained new meanings in his interpretation. In this study, the relationship between interpretation and ideology in the contemporary period is examined in the context of Sayyid Qutb's work titled Fi Zilali'l-Quran. It is analyzed how and to what extent ideological concepts are addressed in Qutb's interpretation. In addition, background elements such as the intellectual environment of the period in which the work was written, the conditions of writing, and the call to struggle with social change are also evaluated. Qutb's interpretation of the Quran is shaped by an ideological perspective and positions the Quran as a dynamic source of social transformation.
