Abstract (EN)

The objective of this study is the improvement of mechanical and fire retardant properties of poly(butylene terephthalate) composite. In order to investigate flame resistance efficiency of PBT and glass fiber reinforced PBT (GF-PBT) composites, boron phosphate (BP), triphenyl phosphate (TPP), zinc borate (ZB) and calcium sulphate dihydrate (CSD) additives were used at 5 % and 10 % loading levels, also different binary combinations were examined. PBT compounds were prepared by using a co-rotating twin screw extruder and injection molding machine. The composites were characterized in terms of flammability and mechanical properties. In this study, it was observed that TPP is the most successful flame retardant additive for PBT and GF-PBT in terms of flammability properties. Highest LOI values were obtained when 10 % TPP was added to PBT matrix and LOI increased to 27.2. However, TPP additive was decreased some mechanical properties like tensile strength and flexural strength values. So as to increase mechanical properties TPP combined with BP flame retardant additive. Even though some decreases in LOI value occurred compare to TPP base formulation, combination of TPP with BP showed high LOI results with higher mechanical properties. Furthermore, combinations of BP with ZB additive showed a significant synergistic effectiveness from the point of flammability. 30 % glass fiber reinforced PBT (GF-PBT) provided to reach higher mechanical properties, but lower LOI values than that of GF free PBT composites. On the other hand, the optimization between mechanical and flame retardant properties of PBT was achieved, in this study.
