Iridescent glass in glass art from to past to present and personal implementation

The aim of this thesis is to study definitions, historical process and production methods of iridescent glass. This thesis work consists of five chapters containing theoretical formulation gathered from sources such as books, articles, internet etc. and practical implementation of the gathered information. Objective and scope of this thesis work are expressed in the first chapter. In the second chapter, definitions and the historical development of iridescent glass are studied. First, under "History of iridescent glass", beginning from the discovery of iridescent glass until industrial revolution, important examples of the work are mentioned. Subsequently, under "Examples of iridescent glass since the industrial revolution", the applications of iridescent glass in United States of America during Art Nouveau period are mentioned. In the chapter "Manufacturers of iridescent glass in United Stated of America", Tiffany's production of iridescent glass is studied separately. In addition to this, other prominent American manufacturers are mentioned followed by the mass-produced carnival glass. In chapter three, the production methods of iridescent glass are mainly viewed. Following this, iridescent glass production is divided in four methods namely scorching, steaming, spraying and lustering. The used equipment and ingredients are specified. In chapter four, where the personal implementation is also included, technical and practical stages for producing iridescent glass for artistic purposes are explained.
