Abstract (EN)
ABSTRACT The growing power of the Chinese economy has been among the most controversial subjects in the economic literature since the last years. Due to its sheer size in population and enhanced with its membership to the World Trade Organization, China is harshly challenging most of the states with its growing economic power, and creating a "China phobia" in the world. This thesis argues that China owes its economic growth largely to the implementation of successful foreign trade reforms, which led the country to be among the world's top trader states. The purpose of this study is (1) to investigate the foreign trade reforms, which led to China's trade and investment expansion and (2) to analyze China's economic and trade relations with its major trade partners- the United States, the European Union and Japan as well as with the international institutions- the IMF, the World Trade Organization and the ASEAN. The two objectives demonstrate how China managed to become among the world's leading economic and trade powers. The current study points out that China has achieved extraordinarily successful foreign trade reforms. The thesis also demonstrates that China has established favorable economic and trade relations with its major trade partners, and is playing a strategic role in the WTO and the ASEAN, hi conclusion, this thesis emphasizes that the future of the Chinese economy depends to a great extent on its economic and trade relations with its major trade partners and with the international institutions.
