Female bodies against Foucault's biopower: FEMEN case

Throughout the ages, female bodies have been judged, classified, tried to be dominated, regulated, and controlled by power which is mostly masculine. In this study it is investigated how women use their bodies and languages against biopolitics constructed by biopwer on female body and what things they are against according to Michel Foucault's theory of power. The subject of the research is FEMEN, which is considered a radical feminist group and organizes international distinctive protests. This study conducts a semiotic analysis of seven selected posts from FEMEN Turkey's Instagram account (@fementurkey), spanning from 2020 to 2023. It is tried to understand to what and how those women use their bodies against in the context of biopower. The way FEMEN oppose biopower is mostly contains their bodily expression of anger towards inequalities women faced and restrictions imposed on their bodies because of biopolitics on female body constructed by biopower. The way their use bodies and the language they use in the captions highlights that they are angry, rebellious, sometimes full of hatred, and decisive about conveying those feelings through not staying silent and, calling other women to provide solidarity to make the struggle stronger. Focusing on the language they use it can be said that they are producing hate speech because their words are full of anger. On the other hand, the words they write on their bodies can be counted as well. Keywords: Biopower, biopolitics, body, FEMEN, embodiment, opposing biopower

A user experience research on the integration of air conditioning unit into infotainment systems in automobiles

The climate control unit of the recently produced automobiles are now controlled via a touchscreen of the infotainment system. This is a fairly new technology that has started to be implemented in a very limited number of models over the last decade. This new technology showcases the advancements in the cockpit design of the automobiles, but also raises concerns and discussions to be evaluated from the user perspective. With this new technology, the haptic feedback from the physical buttons are now taken out and the new controls need the visual attention of the users. However, this creates a problem regarding driver distraction and user convenience. To be able to make a research that is supported by evidence, user tests and surveys will be conducted within this thesis. The outcome from these experiments were utilized to bring together generic user feedback for this new technology. To be able to ask the right questions to end-users, separate interviews with user experience designers working in the automotive industry were organized and their opinions were asked. Analysis of the interviews, surveys and user tests were analyzed in a separate chapter. A conclusion chapter summarizes the findings from the previous chapters. Qualitative data collection methods will be used in this work. These methods consist of expert interviews in the first step. In the second step, end-users are found from different demographics and user tests are conducted with them. A number of questions are directed to these users before and after they use an automobile with the climate control integrated into the infotainment system. During their driving time, users are asked to complete a number of tasks in different traffic conditions. The results from the surveys and from the driving experience were analyzed in detail. An investigation on the evolution of Turkish pavillion at Venice Art Biennale

Even though Turkey has been participating in the Venice Biennale since 1991, it only recently obtained a long-term venue and pavilion in 2014, due to the initiative of the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV, 2024). This study intends to research the Turkish Pavilion's development at the Venice Biennale between the years 2003 and 2022 by focusing on curators, curatorial frameworks, artists and artworks. The goal of this thesis is to decide upon a model from among these exhibitions that will consolidate the position of the Turkish Pavilion to warrant a venue at the Venice Biennale in future. For the methodology, I intend to conduct research at the online Historical Archives of Contemporary Arts (ASAC: Archive Storico Delle Art Contemporanee), I will analyse not only archival materials as case studies, but will also conduct interviews with curators and artists of the selected biennials. Finally, I intend to review national and international literature in order to collect relevant data. Keywords: Artist, Curator, Exhibition, Turkish Pavillion, Venice Biennale

The effects of forced migration on generations and societies: A historical and analytical approach to film 'Dedemin Insanlari'

Forced migration, as a source of major problems, leaves significant impacts on societies. Even though there are many problems regarding fundamental rights like housing, health, education, justice, etc., the part that comes to light in the representations is mainly the identity problem, and the problem of belonging created by the problematic identity. The problems experienced via migration have left various traumas in society. Traumas do not merely belong to the first generations that migrated and faced discrimination, injustice and tyranny at first hand, but it also affects the next generations directly and indirectly in a historical process. Social tragedies are transmitted from generation over time, since the memory does not remain as an individual phenomenon that leaks away. Social memory takes place in transmission, as an actor that transfers the historical and social thoughts, needs, pains and longings etc. from generations to next generations, but one of the most important transmitter is the mass media, which transfers the social and historical values and informations to masses with representations is undoubtedly cinema. In this study, the relationship of forced migration on societies and generations, in the context of identity and memory, is examined through representation. The aim of the research is to evaluate the possibility of traumatic recollection in collective memory and to examine the confusion of history, society and identity that creates this trauma through a filmic representation. This purpose also includes examining the construction of the nation-state, which has an impact on this identity confusion, ideological concepts such as ethnicity, racism and nationalism that determine this construction, and the effects of the discourses based on these concepts. The study is based on the film Dedemin Insanlari (Irmak, 2011). The reason for choosing this film is that it can represent the impact of the concepts of migration, memory, and identity on generations through the film's characters, their characteristics, actions, and discourse, reflecting the historicity in cinematic representations. The film is examined with Teun A. van Dijk critical discourse analysis method. The ideological discourses in the films world and characters are examined and explained in detail. Forced migration undoubtedly has left traumatic traces in the memories of societies. The expected result at the end of the study is as follows; The trauma deepens as the characters encounter physical or political obstacles through historical places, which are one of the founding elements of memory. Unless history is handed down to new generations face to face, problems of belonging, remembering and identity grow. The traumatic social trace also shape the stories told, and are reflected in the representations. Keywords: Cinema, Identity, Memory, Migration

Effect of macroeconomic news announcement on bond market

The primary aim of this dissertation is to explain the factors effecting the behavior of the bond markets, with a specific focus on the elements affecting the local currency-denominated government bond yields in emerging markets. This analysis involves distinguishing the impact of both domestic and international factors and explaining the connections between foreign ownership and worldwide risk appetite. The first research question of this dissertation examines how foreign participation and global risk appetite affect the yields of government bonds with long-term maturity issued in local currencies within emerging markets. We use a novel approach by utilizing the panel two threshold variable model. Our analysis of panel data shows that foreign participation in the domestic government bond market leads to a decrease long-term government yield, and there is a threshold level in foreign participation. We also look at the global risk appetite interaction with the level of foreign participation. The analysis incorporates 19 emerging market countries, contributing to an understanding of the factors driving bond yields in these economies. This study concludes at the Federal Reserve's interest rate hike in 2015. The timing is pivotal, as it marks a shift in global financial conditions, offering a natural boundary for our analysis of emerging market economies' bond yields in relation to foreign ownership and debt levels. The second research question explores the impact of macroeconomic news and risk appetite on local currency government bond yields in Türkiye, utilizing an event study with data from 2005 to 2023. We explore the influence of unexpected macroeconomic news, monetary policy announcements, and risk events on the average and conditional volatility of Turkish bond returns. The research extends beyond the reaction of bond prices to unexpected news by exploring the dynamic response of the bond market to variations in risk appetite. The study reveals significant impacts of inflation and other domestic indicators on bond returns, a pattern consistent with mature markets, while also highlighting the intricate interplay between domestic economic conditions and global shifts. By incorporating a Risk State variable derived from the VIX index and considering local geopolitical events, the research provides an understanding of the dynamic bond market responses to varying risk perceptions and news events. This study contributes to the literature by utilizing a novel model to explain the determinants of domestic bond yields. The focus on is emerging markets, which is a segment that has been relatively ignored in past research. Also, this study explores the global and local news impact of government bond markets at a country level specifically focusing on the Turkish market. This part also addresses a gap in the existing literature by examining the effects on various bond maturities, offering insights into the entire yield curve's sensitivities in Türkiye. This analysis is facilitated by utilizing a comprehensive dataset consisting of economic forecast survey data. Overall, this comprehensive approach provides insights for investors, policymakers, and academics interested in the complex dynamics of emerging market bonds and the various domestic and international factors shaping their yields.
