Abstract (EN)

Introduction: Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is characterized by the downward displacement of the vaginal walls, cervix, or vaginal cuff from their normal anatomical positions. This condition can significantly impact the quality of life and sexual functioning of affected women. Over the years, numerous surgical techniques have been developed and utilized for the treatment of POP. In this study, we focused on elderly, non–sexually active women diagnosed with stage 4 total pelvic organ prolapse (according to the POP-Q classification) and evaluated the outcomes of vaginectomy surgery. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of this surgical procedure in terms of patient comfort by administering a satisfaction questionnaire to patients who had undergone total vaginectomy and had completed a minimum of 6 months of postoperative follow-up. Materials and Methods: Between January 2014 and October 2024, a total of 36 women were included in the study from among 62 patients who had been examined and surgically treated for symptomatic total pelvic organ prolapse by Prof. Dr. M. Okan Özkaya at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Süleyman Demirel University. Demographic data of the patients were collected. All included patients had stage 4 prolapse preoperatively according to the POP-Q staging system. A six-question satisfaction survey was administered to those who had completed 6 months postoperatively. The results were analyzed using statistical methods. Results: The mean age of patients who underwent the surgical procedure was 71.22±7.50 years, mean height was 158.22±5.09 cm, mean weight was 66.75±9.95 kg, and mean BMI was 26.61±3.78 kg/m2 . These findings were consistent with similar studies. All patients included in the study had stage 4 prolapse preoperatively. No recurrence of prolapse was observed in any patient at the 6-month postoperative follow-up. Discussion and Conclusion: These findings support that the results of our study are consistent with current literature and suggest that obliterative procedures, particularly in elderly patients without sexual activity expectations, provide high patient satisfaction and significant symptomatic improvement.
