Teachers? views towards portfolio in geography lesson (The example of Karabük city)

The purpose of this study is to determine secondary school geography teachers? views towards product selection file (portfolio) that is one of the alternative assessment methods. During the research all the geography teachers (60 teachers) in National Educational Directory of Karabük Province in 2009-2010 academic year.The study group of the research carried out through research model are 60 geography teachers in the province of Karabuk.A questionnaire was used in the research to determine the teachers' viewpoints of the portfolio. The questionnaire consists two sections. First section was developed by me and the graduation schools, genders, vocational experience, class sizes at their schools, the most common measurement tools in geography lessons, adequacy in alternative assessment methods and their demand on the vocational courses were investigated.In the second section of the research, a questionnaire developed by Serdar Gözüm (2008) and used in his thesis study on ?Primary 4,5 and 6th grade students? and teachers? views on Portfolio and its contents science and technology lessons?. In the second section questions towards the features of the portfolio were directed.The data collected in the study was analyzed by the SPSS 15.0 program using frequency (f), percentage (%), the arithmetic mean ( ) and standard deviation (sd), t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA).According to the findings of the study;1.Although geography teachers participated in the application accept the implementation of alternative methods of assessment is correct, they do not make use of them.2.The application of portfolio assessment method is not common among the geography teachers and they prefer written exams at the high rate instead.3.Geography teachers' opinions on the implementation of a portfolio in geography lessons did not indicate a significant difference according to "gender", "the schools", "year of professional experience", "duty of their schools? and ?class size, " variables.Depending on the results of the study suggestions were also proposed by the researcher.Keywords: Geography Education, Geography Teacher, Alternative Evaluation Methods, Portfolio.
