Abstract (EN)

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN METABOLİC PARAMETERS AND CHROMİUMLEVELS OF PLASMA, ERYTHROCYTE AND URINE IN TYPE 1 DIABETICAND HEALTY CHİLDREN AND ADOLESCENT IN CUKUROVA REGIONThe purpose of this study was to compare the chromium levels of plasma, erythrocyte and urine in type-1 diabetics and healthy subjects and to review therelationship between metabolic parameters such as plasma glucose, HbA1c, insulin, C-peptide and chromium levels and to investiga the biological importance of chromium. This study included 165 subjects who were newly diagnosed type-1 diabetics(29), previously diagnosed type-1 diabetics (18) and nondiabetic control group who wasadmitted and treated for any reason in hospital (21) and two other control groups from twoschools that have different socio-economic levels (School-1:48 School-2:49). Chromiumlevels were determined by grafit furnace atomic absorption method.Plasma chromium levels in newly and previously diagnosed type-1 diabetics(7,21±4,78 10,94±3,04, respectively) were significantly lower than all control groups(21,84±7,87, 16,11±7,44, 17,25±8,58 mcg/l, respectively), (p<0,05). There was asignificant difference in plasma levels between newly and previously diagnosed type-1diabetics (p=0,021). Erythrocyte chromium levels in newly and previously diagnosed type-1 diabetics (13,99±11,37, 19,64±12,58 mcg/l , respectively) were significantly lower thanall control groups (28,20±7,34, 25,49±12,47, 26,37±9,77 mcg/l, respectively), (p<0,05).Urine chromium levels of newly and previously diagnosed type-1 diabetics (11,44±6,88,15,68±6,75, mcg/l, respectively) were significantly lower than control-1 group (28,83±9,37mcg/l), (p<0,05). There were significant correlations between lenght and body weight ofthe patients in newly diagnosed type-1 diabetics (r= 0,42 p= 0,022 and r= 0,53 p= 0,003,respectively). There was a negative correlation between age and plasma chromium levelsin School-1 group.(r= -0,2 p= 0,044) There was a negative correlation between plasmaglucose and urine chromium levels which was not statistically significant in previouslydiagnosed type-1 diabetics (r= -0,4 p=0,061). There was no relationship between plasma, erythrocyte and urine chromium levels with HbA1c, insulin and C-peptid levels.7Conclusion; we showed that there was a negative chromium balance in type-1diabetics. We suggest that this negative balance may effect the insulin function badly. There were a positive correlations between lenght and body weight and plasma chromiumlevels. Also there were negative correlations between plasma chromium levels and age andbetween plasma glucose and urine chromium levels. These findings were consisted withprevious studies in the literature.Key words: erythrocyte chromium, plasma chromium, urine chromium, type 1 diabetesmellitus8
