This dissertation explores the life and diplomatic career of David Urquhart (1805-1840), a British diplomat and writer who played a significant role in shaping Anglo-Ottoman relations during the early 19th century. Urquhart's career was marked by his deep interest in the Ottoman Empire and his staunch opposition to Russian expansionism, which positioned him as a controversial figure in British foreign policy. The study begins by examining Urquhart's early life and family background, particularly the Urquhart clan, and proceeds to analyze his involvement in the Greek War of Independence. His initialen counters with the Ottoman World influenced his perspectives on Eastern affairs and set the foundation for his later diplomatic initiatives. Urquhart's tenure in Istanbul as a diplomatic agent is a key focus of the thesis. His activities in the British Embassy, his early diplomatic maneuvers, and his engagement with local politics and Trade negotiation sare examined in detail. The dissertation further investigates the Circassian Question, where Urquhart actively supported the Circassian resistance against Russian encroachment, reflecting his broader ideological stance against Russian imperialism. A central theme of this study is Urquhart's vision of the East, where he viewed the Ottoman Empire not as a declining power but as a model of social and economic organization.
