Abstract (EN)

Water bodies have a great importance for the environment and ecological balance. For the protection, management, and development of these sensitive areas, they should be continuously monitored with accurate and reliable sources. Advances in remote sensing technology and digital image processing methods constitute an important potential for the determination, monitoring, and evaluation of the water bodies current status. Especially, the development of spatial and spectral resolutions of satellite images contribute to this potential. In this study, with using 5 different commonly used water indices and classification methods, and Landsat 8 and Sentinel 2 satellite images, the water bodies of Meriç Delta were determined and evaluated comparatively. In the first section, information about water body extraction by using satellite images obtained from remote sensing, the scope and the purpose of the study are presented. In the second chapter, the basic principles of remote sensing are summarized. The electromagnetic spectrum, the interaction of the energy with the atmosphere, the interaction of the energy with the earth and the spectral characteristics of the objects are given. In the third chapter; information extraction methods (digitizing, spectral indices and classification methods) from remote sensing images are explained. In addition, the preprocessing steps of satellite images are described in this section. In the fourth chapter, Meriç Delta and selected test areas (Dalyan Lake, Gala Lake, Pamuklu Lake, and Sığırcı Lake test areas), and the characteristics of satellite images used in the thesis are presented. The preprocessing steps of the Landsat 8 and Sentinel 2 satellite images are summarized in the order. Results of the information extraction methods are presented in this chapter. The correlation coefficients of each pair of index images obtained from the two satellite images were calculated and presented via scatterplots in order to demonstrate the validation and comparability of different sensors. Finally, the accuracy of thematic maps obtained by spectral indices and classification and were evaluated. In the fifth chapter, the results of the study were discussed and these results were compared and interpreted with other important researches in the literature.
