Abstract (EN)

This thesis examines the political, social, and economic structure of Samsun through the news and advertisements published in the Demokrat Canik Newspaper between 1952 and 1960. The 1950s were a period marked by Turkey's transition to a multi-party system, accelerated democratization processes, and intense socio-economic transformations. As a significant trade and industrial center in the Black Sea Region, Samsun deeply felt these changes and strengthened its position within the Turkish economy. The study is divided into three main sections, along with the introduction: Political, Social and Cultural, and Economic. The Political section analyzes the political life in Samsun through the Demokrat Canik Newspaper, focusing on the activities of major political parties of the era, such as the Democrat Party and the Republican People's Party, as well as election processes and local government policies. The Social and Cultural section examines population movements, healthcare services, educational institutions, and cultural events in the city, with a particular focus on the settlement of Bulgarian immigrants and key aspects of social life. The Economic section assesses Samsun's fundamental economic activities, including agriculture, livestock, industry, and trade, highlighting critical topics like tobacco production and the construction of Samsun Port. Using the Demokrat Canik Newspaper as a primary source, the thesis provides a comprehensive perspective on Samsun's role and significance in 1950s Turkey, shedding light on the city's economic and social developments, as well as the impact of political events.
