Application of efqm excellence model on the life saving appliances manufacturers

Maritime transportation is a denagerous voyage for passengers and dangerous working space for seafarers. Vessels can face dangerous situations such as sinking, fire and collision during the seaway. Life saving appliances provides important aids for survival at sea to seafarers and passengers in such kind of dangerous situations. Application of EFQM Excellence Model on the life saving appliances manufacturers is discussed in this study. It is aimed that increase quality awareness by EFQM Excellence Model appllication and trigger Total Quality Management philosophy and appllications in the companies manufacture life saving appliences. In addition some measurable criterias and applicable management model provided to companies in order to make easier starting EFQM Excellence Model application. In the first section, necessity of study issued. Theoretical informations is given from literature in the second section. In this section; historical and cenceptual development, description and principles of Total Quality Management are issued. Then, application systems and tools are issued. Finally quality award applications in the world are issued in this section. EFQM Excellence Model, which is used in Europe, is the latest application tool of Total Quality Management. EFQM Excellence Model helps to foundations for improving quality in all areas by providing holistic perspective. In the third section of study, the basic concepts of excellence, excellence criterias, RADAR method and self-assessment are issued. All informations given by documents which is collected from KALDER. They are the representative foundation of EFQM in Turkey. In the fourth section of study, International Maritime Organization(IMO), main structure of it, adoptions and standarts about life saving appliances generated by them are issued. The list of life saving appliances according to LSA Code is given in the last part of this section. In the fifith section of study, the application method and results of survey in the manufacturer companies are issued. Survey questions are generated by EFQM Excellence Model and literature. Survey was applicated successfully and results was analysed with EFQM evaluation method. The results of analyses are crosschecked with the results of employee satisfaction survey and customer satisfaction survey results which are obtained from one of the subject company. Both results of survey are parallel. Finally, some recommendations are made for companies manufacture life saving appliances. The weakness in the opinion of the employees of companies are determined. They are recommended to making improvements in these areas in order to reach excellence. Some measureable criterias are provided in order to make easier to apply EFQM Excellence Model. In short, Companies should take heed of employee expectations and ideas, give more attention to their trainings and developments They should use more efficient all the sources owned. They should use measurement and control tools such as process efficiency, performance evaluation and competitior analysis.
