The medicinal and aromatic plant in the city of Derna

The humankind has used the various parts of plant species or the active substances from various plants since the ancient times. The medical and aromatic plant species are used with the concept of alternative medicine in the treatment of various diseases in today's conditions and these plants have been started to be used in the fields such as perfumery, cosmetics, spices and phytotherapy. In this study, the general vegatation was searched with the medical and aromatic plants that their use is known in the region, Derna (Libya). The results have shown that one of the most important plant species which constitutes the vegatation in the region is Juniperus phoenicea L, Pistacia lentiscus L, Pinus halepensis Millr, Ceratonia siliqua and Myrtus communis L. Phlomis floccosa L, Cistus L, and Calicotome villosa L. Moreover, it was determined that the vegatation is exposed to the deterioration factors which are considered as the most important and most effective in the human factors, including the fire of medical and aromatic plants growing in this region, cutting them, the collection of plants to use in medicine, construction of forest ways and grazing. The study ends with a set ıf programs and recommendations to decrease the deterioration of vegetation in the region and to provide the most important necessary steps and procedures for the protection and conservation of vegetation which include the medical and aromatic species. The study recommends the various development programs which protect the plant species that they have difficulty in the rare reproduction under the duress. It is necessary to promote the reproduction of these plant species in private and public plantations.
