Abstract (EN)
Embankment dams have long been a popular choice due to their affordability and ease of construction with readily available materials. In fact, they make up the majority of dams worldwide, accounting for around 65% of all dams. However, because of the materials used in their construction, these structures are not impermeable, which leads to seepage, or the movement of water within the dam body. It has been observed that embankment dams that failed between 1900 and 1975 shared common issues such as piping and seepage, overtopping, and foundation problems. To mitigate seepage, protective filters are typically used in dams to prevent the displacement of one material layer with another and facilitate drainage between layers. The primary goal of filters is to reduce the effects of seepage on the dam body. This study investigated the impact of changes in reservoir water head, filter material permeability, and physical properties of filter on seepage and water head in a dam body for 273 dams with three types of filters: blanket, toe, and chimney. The main dam was designed and its stability was analyzed using PLAXIS 2D, while SEEP/W was utilized to determine seepage and water head in the dam body via the finite element method. The results of this study reinforce the critical importance of effective filter design in mitigating the effects of seepage in embankment dams.
