Investigation of the effects of tomato juice supplementation in exercise practice

Abstract (EN)

The present study investigated the effects of tomato juice on oxidative stress and certain serum biochemistry parameters in exercised students. The study was conducted with 15 male students who do sports for health reasons. Accordingly, chronic exercise, which covered 10 minutes of warm-up exercises, 30 minutes of jogging at 70-80% intensity using the Karvonen formula (Voit Epic II Plus treadmill), and 10 minutes of cool-down exercises, were conducted for 21 days while on the 22nd day, acute exercise, which covered 10 minutes of warm-up using the Karvonen method (Voit Epic II Plus treadmill) at an intensity of 80-90% until the students could not run, was initiated. At the end of each exercise, 250 ml of tomato juice was given to the participants. The period between the 23rd and 43rd days (for 21 days) was the washout period and no tomato juice was given. Between the 23rd and 43rd days (for 21 days), chronic exercise was implemented and on the 24th day, the acute exercise protocol was initiated. The conformity of the data to the normal distribution was determined with the Shapiro-Wilk Test. The difference between the variations in the data according to time was examined with the Friedman Test. Wilcoxon test was used for pairwise comparison of the groups. As a result, tomato juice supplementation decreased the activities of aspartataminotrensferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and levels of urea, cholesterol, triglyceride, lactate, and malondialdehyde (MDA) and increased the levels of creatine, glucose, insulin, and vitamin C and activities of glutathione peroxidase (GSPx), glutathione reductase (GR), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) in exercised students. While acute exercise increased oxidative stress, chronic exercise decreased oxidative stress by reducing lipid peroxidation levels. In conclusion, chronic exercise and tomato juice were reduced oxidative stress by demonstrating a synergistic effect.
