Geotechnical evaluation of clay soils improved with different additives under the effect of freezing and thawing

Abstract (EN)

Since the beginning of human history, humanity has been experiencing a housing problem with the increasing population. With the science of geotechnics, it is tried to improve the soils that are not suitable for construction in order to avoid the scarcity of lands that can meet the need for shelter required for the increasing population or the destruction of agricultural lands by methods called ground improvement. In this study, the effect of tile dust waste + biopolymer combination on soil improvement and the change of settlement and strength parameters after freeze-thaw were investigated. For this purpose, consolidation and unconfined compression tests were performed on natural clay sample with optimum water content by adding tile dust at the rates of 1%, 2%, 3%, 4% and 5% and biopolymer at the rates of 0.5%, 0.75%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4% and 5% and the same series of experiments with the optimum rates for freeze-thaw behavior and the number of cycles 1,3,5,10 were applied to the natural clay soil. The obtained parameters and the parameters of the soil in its natural state were compared. As a result of unnconfined compression tests, 3% KT and 1% AZ provided maximum strength. The strength of the mixture obtained by mixing the two additives together was found to be higher than the strength of both additives. In the consolidation tests, the settlement and time to 90% settlement were calculated by means of the parameters obtained and compared with the natural state. In terms of settlement and time, consolidation of KT and AZ, both alone and in mixtures, resulted in improvement in both parameters. For freeze-thaw, the same experiments were applied to the mixture and the natural clay soil.
