Abstract (EN)

The aim of this thesis is to illustrate the effects of excessive militarism and nationalism on the political and moral consciousness of individual in the First World War. The thesis uses Hemingway?s book A Farewell to Arms to examine to what extent militarism and nationalism are manipulated under abstract values. Upon examining the novel; it becomes evident that the authoritative system constructs the abstract values such as democracy, freedom, and equality to rationalize the war. However, as Hemingway points out in his novel, these values turn into an aggressive, expansionist, and a militaristic character in the war. To summarize, the humanitarian system, which celebrates the unity of human beings beyond the rational and national egoism, will enlighten the civilization and humanity. KEY WORDS: 1. Excessive nationalism, 2.Militarism, 3. War 4.Authority 5. National Egoism
