Abstract (EN)

Brain volume is important in many diseases in both children and adults. The aim of this study was to investigate cerebral cortex, cerebral white matter, cerebrum, cerebellum, total brain and intracranial space volume in children with generalized and partial seizures diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy. For this purpose, cranial magnetic resonance images of the 3-16 year old age group of 100 (female: 50, male: 50) epilepsy patients with Philips Ingenia 1.5-T MRI were examined retrospectively. The volume of the structures on these images was calculated by stereological method. Data were compared according to gender and type of seizure. The volumes of cerebral cortex, white matter, cerebrum and cerebellum were found to be significantly greater in males than females, especially in total brain and intracranial space volumes (p:0.017, p:0.012, p:0.008, p:0.008, p:0.002, p:0.001, retrospectively). There were no significant differences between the partial and generalized epilepsy groups (p>0.05). It is thought that the findings are important in understanding the effect of epilepsy on brain volume.
